what's the deal with c-mounts?

hi, what is c-mount? is that like a thread or bayonet? are there one mount called c-mount and one called c-thread or am i just confused?

please tell me wether c-mount is bayonet or screw, if screw, what type of thread diameter etc. i know m42 is 42mm thread =)
